Stephen Cleary’s Advanced Story Workshop

This 2-day course takes the normal approach to thinking about story structure, plotting and character development and turns it inside out. This advanced workshop shows you how to use a deep understanding of how audiences experience a story to explore plot, character, and theme, and more besides. It guarantees to change your way of thinking about how you approach writing (and rewriting) any screen story. It’s flexible and applies from blockbuster to a personal art-house movie stories, from an entire TV drama series to a single online webisode, and is relevant for fiction and documentary.

Stephen Cleary has worked in film and television for over 20 years. His career began at the UK’s national film Agency, where as Head of Development he developed feature films including Before the Rain (Academy Award nominee for best foreign film, winner Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival), Rob Roy, Butterfly Kiss, Love and Death on Long Island (Richard Kwietniowski) and Photographing Fairies.

Stephen is now a story development consultant working all over the world. He was the story consultant on the BBC TV detective series Hinterland and the lead consultant on the Emmy Award winning feature documentary What Happened Miss Simone? This year he developed and was the story consultant on Sweet Country, directed by Warwick Thornton, and on the other side of the world ran the first screen story development workshop in Greenland.
